Providing toilets for school girls in rural Uganda

Restoring dignity and safety to young girls

Lack of toilets and open defecation is a common problem in many parts of the world. When Unni encountered a school in rural Uganda which had no toilets at all, the impact on the girls in particular was severe, especially during their periods. The pupils huddled into groups to try to provide some privacy for each other.

By raising a small amount of funding, they got a local builder to construct a 3-cubicle latrine block for under £500. The impact on the lives of all of the staff and pupils was amazing.
