Unni

Unni Wariyar is a retired paediatrician who looked after children and newborn babies in Newcastle, and who received an OBE for setting up a nurse-led baby unit in Northumberland.

He went to Iran to promote child immunisation during the 1979 Revolution, and in 1996 he helped set up a Newborn Baby Unit in Sarajevo after it was sieged during the Bosnian war.

Since retiring he has worked as a volunteer children’s doctor in Uganda, Ethiopia and Lesotho, as well as helping in Liberia during the Ebola crisis.

He teaches with passion, and leads by example (“it’s hard not to get stuck in when your professor is getting his hands dirty”).
